We are what we think. With our thoughts we make the world. ~Buddha

Ayurveda is a 5,000 year-old holistic system of healing, and is known as the sister science of yoga. It works as a complement to yoga. “Ayur” means life, and “Veda” means knowledge, so Ayurveda translates as "knowledge of life." It offers an approach to life that is in harmony with the natural world.

Ayurveda takes into account physical constitution, emotional nature, and spiritual wellbeing in the context of the natural world. According to the philosophy of Ayurveda, prana (life force) manifests as three different energies, or doshas, known as vata, pitta, and kapha. Throughout our lives the three doshas move and fluctuate within us according to the seasons, the climate, our environment, our diet, our age, and many other factors. As the doshas move into and out of balance, they affect our health, energy level, and general mood. Ayurveda works to bring the doshas into balance.

At Kumbhak Yoga we offer guidance in making Ayurvedic choices for your life. We introduce you to the doshas, recommend an Ayurvedic approach to food and herbs, explore how food and the mind work together, how food affects our emotions, and techniques to cleanse and care for the body both inside and out.

Yoga and Ayurveda are not merely two
separate but related healing disciplines...
Each has its unique place and function,
but each overlaps into the other on
various levels. ~ David Frawley
